Character Development

Building a strong, caring and compassionate society

Character development helps our children grow as individuals, learners and engaged citizens. It also helps to create school environments where civic responsibility and academic achievement thrive.

Students have many influences in their lives. Schools, parents (the first character developers), families and communities need to promote the universal attributes that Ontarians share such as respect, fairness and responsibility. These are the qualities that all children need to be successful in school and in life.

That is why we are providing boards and schools with the tools they need to create and extend character development programs. This includes the policy framework Finding Common Ground: Character Development in Ontario Schools, K-12 and a handbook of successful practices showing character development in action. There is also a shortened guide to character development (PDF, 268 KB) that has been developed to explain character development to parents.
