Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO)
Measuring progress in our schools
EQAO — the Education Quality and Accountability Office — is an arm's–length agency of the government that conducts province-wide assessments of student achievement in Grades 3, 6, 9 and 10.
Student achievement is measured against curriculum expectations. EQAO assessments are only one of many ways student achievement is evaluated. The results are important because they give parents, the government and schools a clear picture of how well our school system is doing. Teachers and principals have more information on how well individual students are meeting the expectations in the provincial curriculum.
Clear progress is being made. Overall, 64% of Grade 3 and 6 students are meeting or exceeding provincial standards in reading, writing and math combined... an increase of 10 percentage points since 2002-03.
This recent and steady progress has allowed us to move closer to our overall goal of 75% of all Ontario students meeting the provincial standard by 2008.
