French-Language Education
Helping French-language students achieve their full potential
French-language education serves students whose parents have a right to have their children educated in the French language and culture under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
In French-language elementary and secondary schools, the curriculum is taught entirely in French. French-language schools also protect, transmit and enhance French language and culture.
French-language education is different from French immersion. French immersion and core French programs are for students in English-language schools who are learning French as a second language.
The Politique d'aménagement linguistique, or language planning policy, sets out guidelines for French-language schools, school boards and the Ontario government to:
- Improve student achievement and self-esteem
- Help promote French language and culture
- Help keep young Franco-Ontarians in French-language schools.
In addition, a permanent task force exists to provide advice to the government about unique issues that affect French-language education in Ontario.
Student achievement is on the rise in French-language schools. In fact, Grade 6 French-language students are already exceeding the provincial goal in reading, writing and math.
