Schools and School Boards

The following are the most recent facts and figures available for Ontario's publicly funded education system.

  • Administration: Ontario's schools are administered by district school boards and school authorities.
  • School boards are divided as follows:
    • 31 English Public
    • 29 English Catholic
    • 4 French Public
    • 8 French Catholic
  • There are 10 School Authorities, consisting of 4 geographically isolated boards and 6 hospital-based school authorities.
  • There is 1 Provincial Schools Authority.
  • As of 2017-2018, there were 3,954 elementary and 896 secondary schools in Ontario.

Education Funding

  • For 2017-2018, the government's total investment excluding capital was estimated to be $23.9 billion.
  • For 2017-2018, the government's total capital investment was estimated to be $1.88 billion.

Teachers, Administrators and Early Childhood Educators**

  • In 2017-2018, there were 125,979.93 full time equivalent (FTE) teachers and FTE long-term occasional (LTO) teachers, consisting of 83,742.24 elementary and  42,237.69 secondary teachers. The numbers exclude teachers on leave and teachers in care and/or treatment, custody and correctional facilities.
    • There were 115,123.24  FTE teachers, consisting of 76,172.19 elementary and  38,951.05 secondary teachers. The numbers exclude teachers on leave and LTO teachers.
    • There were 10,856.69 FTE LTO teachers, consisting of 7,570.05 elementary and  3,286.64 secondary LTO teachers.
  • In 2017-2018, there were 7,354.38 FTE administrators (principals and vice-principals), consisting of 5,360.76 elementary and 1,993.62 secondary administrators.
  • In 2017-2018, there were 9,054.46 FTE early childhood educators (ECE), excluding LTO ECEs.
  • In 2017-2018, there were 829.77 FTE LTO ECEs.
