August 30, 2011

Welcome back!

Welcome back to a new school year. I hope everyone had a relaxing summer and is ready for a successful 2011/12.

New School Food And Beverage Policy

The new School Food and Beverage Policy takes effect on September 1.

The new policy includes nutrition standards which will apply to food and beverages sold:

  • in all venues on school property such as cafeterias, vending machines and tuck shops;
  • through all programs, including catered lunch programs; and
  • at all events on school property, including bake sales and sport events.

The standards do not apply to lunches or snacks that are brought from home, and there are also a limited number of exemptions that can be used each year.

The ministry website has more information on the new policy.

Parents Reaching Out Grants

For the 2011-12 school year, the ministry is awarding grants to 1,763 projects, including 1,718 school councils and 45 regional and provincial projects. A total of 1,849 school council and 115 regional applications were received.

More detailed information about the projects that were awarded grants for 2011-12 is on the ministry website.

Student Voice: applications now online

Applications are now available online for SpeakUp grants and for the Minister's Student Advisory Council (MSAC).

Students in grades 7 to 12 are eligible for these two initiatives. Students can also run their own forums using SpeakUp in a Box.

International Confederation of Principals World Convention

From August 15-19, 2011, the 10th International Confederation of Principals World Convention took place in Toronto.

Educators, policy makers and government representatives from around the world attended the event, with Education Minister Dombrowsky speaking at the opening ceremony.
