Memorandum to: Directors of Education

From: Taunya Paquette
Indigenous Education Office

Subject: Indigenous Education: 2017-2018 Board Action Plans

Further to the August 15, 2017 memorandum on the final templates for the development of 2017-2018 Board Action Plan (BAP) on Indigenous Education and the exception application form for board Indigenous Education leads.

The Ministry would like to take this opportunity to clarify and confirm some details in relation to the BAPs.

As indicated in the 2017-18 Grant for Student Needs (GSN) B-memo, the ministry is enveloping the Per-Pupil Amount (PPA) of the Indigenous Education Grant to ensure this funding is used to support programs and initiatives aimed at improving Indigenous student achievement and well-being and increasing all students knowledge and awareness of First Nation, Métis and Inuit histories, cultures and perspectives.

Part of the 2017-2018 BAP template requires boards to insert funding allocations. Currently, the template indicates that section 18.3.7 represents the Total Indigenous Education Allocation for the Per Pupil Amount (PPA). Please note the following correction:

  • Section 18.3.7 of the BAP funding allocation charts should be replaced with Section 18.3.8
    • Section 18.3.8 represents the Total Indigenous Education Allocation for the PPA.
  • Identification of unspent 2016/17 BAP funding in the funding allocation section (page 2 of the BAP template).

We kindly ask that your 2017-2018 BAPs reflect these changes. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Boards will continue to be required to spend at least $84,083.77 in 2017-18 on a dedicated Indigenous Education Lead (Lead). Any remaining funds in the PPA must be used to support the implementation of the Framework through the Board Action Plan on Indigenous Education.

Please note that boards are required to carry over unspent BAP funding from 2016-2017.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Jennifer Feasby, Manager, Indigenous Education Office, at 416-314-8946 or at or your Regional Education Office for Indigenous Education.
