Renewed Mathematics Strategy (RMS)

Date: September 13, 2017

Memorandum to: Directors of Education

From: Renewed Mathematics Strategy

Subject: Launch of Year 2 of the Renewed Mathematics Strategy (RMS)

Dear Director of Education,
Welcome to Year 2 of the Renewed Mathematics Strategy (RMS). We know a lot of great work happened last year and we are excited to continue our partnership with you, through responsive and differentiated support, towards our shared goals of:

  • increased student achievement, well-being and engagement in mathematics;
  • increased educator math knowledge and pedagogical expertise;
  • increased leader use of knowledge of effective mathematics pedagogy to provide the necessary supports and conditions for school and system improvement; and
  • increased parent engagement in their children's mathematics learning.

The ministry will continue to provide school boards/authorities with the same funding supports as Year 1 of the RMS, as well as continue to provide educators with professional learning and targeted supports for students, with an emphasis on students with special education needs, math learning in the early years and in applied mathematics. We know that the work of the RMS is ongoing and it will take continued, sustained efforts by the ministry, school boards/authorities, schools, students, parents and communities to improve mathematics achievement, equity and well-being of all learners.

Similar to last year, we are offering a series of virtual learning sessions to support your work as part of the Renewed Mathematics Strategy. With over 30 options to choose from, we hope that educators from your school board/authority will find sessions that meet their professional learning needs.

You can find the complete listing at:

Note: It is encouraged that participants meet in groups to enhance collaborative learning.
